Week 4: June 28 - July 4, 2004

constructionWe use a paint roller to apply foundation coating (dampproofing) to outside of foundation wall; John King installs perforated foundation drain pipe.
construction- construction
I build a "jig" to fabricate window frames (these are necessary because we will be using vinyl "replacement" windows rather than new construction windows - I like the idea of being able to easily replace the windows in the future, which is not possible with typical new construction windows. The assembled frames are shown at the right.
constructionBackfill is complete; it's now time to begin the wood framing.
constructionBefore installing the sill plate, I make an incision into the existing house so that the addition can be connected.
constructionOver a foam "sill sealer" (not visible here), I place strips of "tyvek" air barrier material under pressure-treated sill plates; the tyvek will ultimately wrap around the plates and plywood sheathing.
constructionA small unanticipated distraction occurs: we discover that the backhoe has crushed a section of our 6" clay sewer pipe, which turns out to be quite shallow. Time to call a plumber...
