Tunnel of Love

Listen to or download MP3 | Live version in Hamburg, Germany

I wrote this song in 1980, prior to the appearance of songs with the same title by Dire Straits and Bruce Springsteen. I shot, animated, and edited the video in 2008. Details for some of the still images and animations in the video are as follows: the tunnel image comes from the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), a chalet in the German Alps built as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler; the superimposed semi-circular "tunnel of love" text is extracted from an image of an actual tunnel of love whose location I was unable to determine; the phallic stone turret containing the dancers is part of The Fuerta San Felipe del Morro, constructed in 1539 in Puerto Rico; the animated dancers are based on an image of four Boca Raton salsa dancers, apparently shot at an event for "4over, Inc." (a wholesale trade printing company whose corporate office is in Glendale, California); the two painting fragments are based on Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" (1931), and Hieronymus Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (1504); and the animated dueling trumpeters are loosely based on images of Miles Davis (from the "Tribute to Jack Johnson" album cover of 1970) and Dizzy Gillespie. By the way, for all you trumpet players, the musical notation accompanying the trumpet solo is an accurate transcription, created on GarageBand based on my midi keyboard improvisation, and transferred to the video by (a) executing a screen capture of the musical notation displayed on GarageBand, (b) cleaning up the image and making the background transparent in PhotoShop, and (c) importing the image into Final Cut Express, where it was motion-keyframed in sync with the music.

Tunnel of Love
Words and music © 1980 J. Ochshorn

1. well you know i've been lost on the road of time traveling so far
and you know it's a long and a dangerous climb when you don't know where you are
it's so hard it's so hard to keep trying when you never seem to win
but you showed me where a new life could begin

[chorus] (tunnel of love) yes you showed me the tunnel of love
now i believe it
now that i know it's a tunnel of love
i'm never gonna leave it

2. well you know i've been caught in these doldrums before out on the ocean
but the way you smiled brought me back to the shore and set me in motion
there's so much so much to discover but you knew it long ago
so let's go on down to where the lights are low

[chorus] (tunnel of love) let's go down to the tunnel of love
now i believe it
now that i know it's a tunnel of love
i'm never gonna leave it

3. when we go down from the world above it's gonna be scary
and when we come in the tunnel of love well it's hot and it's hairy
but don't worry don't worry baby — the world will be on a string
when you show me all the pleasures love can bring

[chorus] (tunnel of love) when you show me the tunnel of love
now i believe it
now that i know it's a tunnel of love
i'm never gonna leave it

because you showed me the tunnel of love
now i believe it
now that i know it's a tunnel of love
i'm never gonna leave it
